How To Join

Joining CID

Any organisation involved in aid and development activity can apply to join CID either as a Full or Associate member.

All members of CID must agree to abide by a Code of Ethics which promotes accountability and includes a set of principles about development.

These principles are:

  • development should be sustainable and encompass the social, spiritual, cultural and economic well-being of people
  • the poor should make decisions about their own development
  • the ultimate test of development policies is their long-term effect on the lives of the poorest sectors of society, especially women and children
  • sustainable development involves the use of all resources for the benefit of future as well as present generations
  • issues of justice, peace, human rights and the protection of the environment cannot be separated from development
  • the Treaty of Waitangi is fundamental to development in our own country, and to our perspective of development issues internationally
  • development education in Aotearoa/New Zealand is an integral part of all development programmes
  • in all promotional activity, Council members should ensure that the dignity of aid recipients is recognised and advanced.

To Join

Applicants are asked to:

  • Signify their written acceptance of CID’s Code of Ethics, Principles and Objectives.
  • Supply a brief written account of their activities.
  • Supply a copy of their latest annual report and audited accounts.
  • Pay an annual subscription fee, which is set by the Executive Council

Full Membership

Full membership is open to any non-governmental organisation in Aotearoa New Zealand (but not to their branches or affiliates involved in development assistance and/or development education).

Members receive regular mailouts, the Development Forum (CID’s newsletter), the CID update and various other email lists. Members are able to fully participate in the Council through the Regional Meetings, which are held twice a year; the AGM; and through election to the Executive Committee which overseas the Council’s activities between meetings. Participation is also encouraged throughout the year through membership feedback on Council activities.

The annual subscription for full membership operates in four levels according to the size of the organisation. These are $100, $250, $450, $750, and $1250 (+ GST).

Associate membership

Associate membership shall be granted to any organisation who is either deemed by the Board to be ineligible for full membership since it does not meet all of the above criteria or who has applied for associate membership. The organisation’s activities must be consistent with and supportive of the principles and objectives of CID.

~ Associate members may attend any CID meetings but have no voting rights
~ Associate members are not eligible for the election or cooption to the Board but may be invited to participate in subcommittees.
