Development 101 with John Overton

19 May 10:30am - 12:00pm
TEAR Fund Office: 64C Stoddard Road, Mt Roskill, Auckland

This seminar will give a clear introduction to development theory and is particularly suited to those without formal development training. John will unpack how we ‘frame’ the developing world, its people and their lives. We survey some of the main schools of thought – and associated policies – that have driven development work over the past 60 years. We finish by asking some questions about development and how this might inform our work.

John Overton is professor of Development Studies at Victoria University of Wellington, and one of New Zealand’s most respected development thinkers. He has conducted research in Kenya, Malaysia, Chile and his current work is on aid and sovereignty in the Pacific. He also admits to having a research interest in the wine industry.

Lunch provided.
