On Wednesday 8 March 2017 the International Women's Peace Group will be co-hosting an International Women’s Day Peace Walk and Performance in Wellington CBD with Women Walk and Work for Peace, Multicultural Council of Wellington and Voice Arts. This year, the theme of the walk is ‘Be Bold for Change’ – to take action for advancing women’s parity in the world of work. This is closely related to the UN Women 2017 theme, “Women in the Changing World of Work: 50-50 by 2030”.
There are numerous women’s organisations presently active in Wellington. To acknowledge and celebrate this, after the walk we will also be having some stalls in the Civic Square area where organisations are able to offer information and activities for the public, to showcase their contribution to the Wellington community.
Walking together on International Women’s Day will build an awareness of our interconnectedness and interdependence in our work for peace. We invite all women from all walks of life, from different religions, ethnicities and cultures to walk with us. It is our hope that this will be the start of each woman’s participation, advocacy, immersion and support towards a culture of peace. We invite each group to bring their own banners or signs and walk for their cause.
The Walk will commence at the Beehive at 11.45am and end at the Civic Square with speeches and performances from 12:30pm. Voice Arts will also be holding a performance at Te Papa from 5-6pm which is free to the public.
