A multidimensional approach to breaking the cycle of poverty, Dr Sujit Brahmochary

Dr Sujit world expert on global health and rural development and the founder and director of the Institute for Indian Mother and Child (IIMC), an NGO based in South Calcutta, will be speaking on the importance of multidimensional approach to breaking the cycle of poverty. His organisation, founded in 1989 has been successfully improving the lives of thousands living in the poorest parts of rural Calcutta. Dr. Sujit Brahmochary is a tremendously passionate and inspiring speaker, and will be sharing his working model for holistic development.

Wellington: The real economic issues New Zealand faces - The international context, Dr Brian Easton

Dr Brian Easton is an economist, social statistician, and public policy analyst who has written a number of reports, articles and books. His most recent book was Globalisation and the Wealth of Nations uses economic analyses developed in the last three decades to describe a history of the world over the last three centuries. He is currently writing an economic history of New Zealand, when he is not writing Listener columns, doing consultancy, and getting involved in public debates.

Wellington: Iran’s foreign policy after the Islamic revolution

HE Seyed Majid Tafreshi Khameneh was appointed the Ambassador of The Islamic Republic of Iran to New Zealand in 2010, and is fluent in English, Turkish, and Persian. Previous posts include being in charge of the Australia and New Zealand desk in MFA, the Third Secretary of the Embassy of The Islamic Republic of Iran – Wellington, a Political expert for the Department of Disarmament and International Security, and Political Counsellor of the Embassy of The Islamic Republic of Iran – Helsinki.

More recently, he was the Group Judicial Director of the Institute for Political and International Studies, Political Expert for the Department of Disarmament and International Security, Minister Counsellor, and Permanent member of the elites Group of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His education includes a BA for Judicial Law along with an MA for International Law and Ph.D. for International Law from Tehran University.

Oxfam’s Biggest Coffee Break

Oxfam’s Biggest Coffee Break takes place annually during Fair Trade Fortnight and is an instrumental element of our fair trade campaign. Sign up as a host at oxfamcoffeebreak.org.nz, and we will provide the Fairtrade Certified goods, including Caffe L'affare coffee, Kokako drinking chocolate, Scarborough Fair tea and Whittaker's chocolate, as well as a bunch of catchy materials including a DVD about the impact of fair trade. You provide the place to host your Coffee Break on any day during Fair Trade Fortnight – whether at home, work, school or in a community space – and enjoy the goods with your guests and fundraise to change lives.

After this enjoy some delicious (and free!) Fairtrade desserts, a mix and mingle with some Fairtrade businesses, and an opportunity to learn more about the VicIDS “Make Vic Fairtrade” campaign. Wellington: Sea-Level Rise, Meeting the Challenge

The New Zealand Climate Change Centre (NZCCC) is holding a 2-day conference on sea-level rise and the challenges this brings as risks change over time. This conference will include keynote speeches from leading international scientists such as John Church, CSIRO Fellow and oceanographer with the Centre for Australian Weather and Climate Research. Scientists will present a synthesis of recent projections for sea-level rise and discuss the uncertainties associated with these projections. They will identify anticipated impacts on New Zealand’s coastal environment and infrastructure resulting from climate change.

The Outlook for someday - Young people + Film + Sustainability

The Outlook for Someday sustainability film project for young people is excited to present its 2012 series of free one-day-film-making workshops. The workshops are open to students from years 7-13 as well as primary/intermediate teachers and youth workers. Spaces are limited to 25 participants per workshop.

This is an oppotunity for young people to and adults to upskill together and to engage with The Outlook for Someday as a vehicle for sustainability film-making. It builds on the success of the pilot Workshop series in 2011.

Wellington: 'All Woman': A Modern Portrait of New Zealand Women by Bev Short

The New Zealand Portrait Gallery Te Pukenga Whakaata has much pleasure in announcing the premiere exhibition of All Woman: a modern portrait of New Zealand women by Bev Short - Photographic Artist.


Wellington-based photographer Bev Short has spent more than two years travelling the length and breadth of New Zealand capturing images of women who inspire her. Many of the women featured have overcome entrenched gender-biased attitudes as they made their mark in their chosen occupation.

Honiara, Solomon Islands: Pacific Psychosocial Forum

The Pacific Psychosocial Forum is a bi-annual event facilitated by the Mandala Foundation that aims to advocate for and enhance psychosocial awareness and systems of staff care and community support throughout the Pacific region. In 2012, the 3-day forum will be held in the Solomon Islands and will focus on the theme of ‘Enabling Resilience in a Crisis’.

The New Zealand Parliamentarians Group on Population and Development (NZPPD), in collaboration with Family Planning International and UNFPA, will be holding a one day Open Hearing on ‘Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights in the Pacific’.

Auckland: DevNet Conference 2012

The next DevNet conference, which will take place as the 2012 International Development Conference (IDC 2012) at the University of Auckland from December 3 to 5, 2012.We have confirmed Dr. Uma Kothari and Dr. Thomas Webster as keynote speakers, more information about them here.

IDC 2012 will provide an international forum for development scholars, researchers, policy makers and practitioners to explore the linkages between the three areas that constitute international development work – the integration of research, policy and practice in development. It is the eighth in a series of DevNet (International Development Studies Network of Aotearoa New Zealand) conferences.

DevNet Conference 2012 Call for Papers

We invite high-quality submissions for sessions and individual papers with a particular focus on the conference theme of integrating research, policy and practice. In addition to scholars in development studies, anthropology, geography, history, global health, international studies, political studies and other related disciplines, we also welcome submissions from practitioners and policy makers who can speak to the effective use of research and its findings in increasing the impact of development projects. 


We have also issued a call for special sessions, in addition to the call for academic papers and panels, that might be more suited for practitioners.
