Sustainability: by whom, for whom?

Presentations and reflections from the Forum

In 2008, the topic for the Hui was ‘Power and Development'. This leads well into the 2009 topic of ‘Sustainability - by whom, for whom?' as it continues and develops the discussions around power and people's ability to participate in their communities. This is a PMC funded event.

The issue and the event:

Is the term ‘sustainability' a Western only term?

Is ‘sustainability' just another way for ‘developed' countries to exert a level of control over ‘less developed' countries?

How is ‘sustainability' decided?

The themes of social, cultural, environmental and economic sustainability will all be explored over the 3 days. We will have speakers sharing their views and perspectives, and participants will be involved in talking about what they have heard and continuing to question, challenge and extend the discussion. Everyone attending the event will be an active participant, and we will be keeping track of the discussions by having an ‘Ideas Gallery' where we will keep a display of ideas and thoughts throughout the event.

The Ideas Gallery:

A section of the space will be used for the Ideas Gallery. This is a space to display the large sheets of paper that are the product of the small group work. These will remain up for the duration of the event. At times, a representative of each group will be the group's curator and describe the contribution to others. People can add to each ‘display' piece by furthering the discussion and/or by posing questions. Each piece will then become part of an on-going discussion.
