Caritas: Key Community Engagement Role - Kaihapai Maori

Posted on 01 June 2019

Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand (www.caritas.org.nz) is the Catholic Bishops’ agency for justice, peace and development. We work in partnership and solidarity with communities in Aotearoa, Oceania and throughout the world, to promote human dignity and the common good. Our work of hope tackles both the causes and effects of poverty and injustice and responds swiftly to human and natural disasters. We promote advocacy and education for justice in New Zealand and overseas, and we play an integral part in the worldwide Caritas network of 165 Catholic relief, development, and social service organisations. In its mission, Caritas seeks to demonstrate whakaaroha – love in action.

This role supports the whole Caritas team to work effectively with Māori communities in Wellington and Aotearoa, building and strengthening relationships of trust. The Kaihāpai Māori will contribute to strengthening and deepening cultural capability within the Caritas team based in Wellington.

In this role you will:

  • show leadership in building relationships of trust with Māori communities in Aotearoa;
  • support the whole Caritas team to work effectively with tangata whenua;
  • give advice and support on the appropriate use of te reo and tikanga Māori, and other cultural expectations through a Māori lens

You will be a fluent or semi-fluent speaker of te reo Māori and be comfortable in spaces governed by tikanga Māori. You will have the confidence to guide and lead others through Māori cultural spaces (marae, hui, wānanga). You will have excellent relationship building skills and the availability to travel nationally and internationally as required. You will have an understanding and commitment to Catholic Social Teaching and be comfortable in a church setting. You will be committed to the vision, mission and values of Caritas and demonstrate a personal commitment to social justice.

This is a challenging leadership role in an organisation addressing poverty, advocating for environmental justice, partnering with indigenous peoples, responding to crises and connecting with communities. If you have a passion to make a meaningful difference, and believe that you have what it takes to contribute to our team in this vital role, we want to hear from you

For this role you will have excellent relationship building skills, a strong capacity to work cross-culturally and the availability to travel nationally and internationally as required. You will hold appropriate tertiary qualifications (or practical equivalent), be committed to the vision, mission and values of Caritas and demonstrate a personal commitment to social justice.
