IDYP - The importance of indigenous knowledge systems in sustainable development

16 May 6:00pm - 9:00pm
Pattle Delamore Partners 235 Broadway #Level 5 Auckland, Auckland 1023

2019 is the UN Year of Indigenous Languages, focusing on the link between language, development, peace and reconciliation. This highlights the important role that indigenous knowledge systems play in community development, on a local, national and international scale. Unlike the Millennium Development Goals, which focused primarily on changes required in developing countries to address poverty and its impacts, the Sustainable Development Goals set out global goals that require action in and by all countries, whatever their stage of development. New Zealand’s context highlights some key issues in drawing on indigenous knowledge systems in sustainable development efforts, both domestically with reference to the special relationship that the Crown have with indigenous peoples here in New Zealand regarding Te Tiriti o Waitangi and internationally through the NZ's international development assistance.
