Critical Türkiye-Syria border crossing to remain open

Posted on 10 August 2023

Six months after the catastrophic Türkiye-Syria earthquake, the UN have announced the main border crossing into Syria will open, and remain so, for the next six months.

A statement released on August 8, which can be attributed to Farhan Haq, the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General on Syria, announced the news, stating that “the consent reaffirmed by Syria in recent days provides a basis for the UN and its partners to lawfully conduct cross-border humanitarian operations through Bab al-Hawa.”

This is a vital step in levelling up assistance to a nation, with levels of humanitarian needs at an all time high and 12 million people suffering from food shortages.

This crossing will be able to be used by the UN for the next three months, and the organisation has been given access into Syria through the Bab al-Salam and Al-Ra’ee crossings for up to six months.
