El Niño causing flooding and drought, having severe humanitarian impact globally

Posted on 23 November 2023

The El Niño weather phenomenon is already having both drastic and varying impacts globally.

In the Horn of Africa, flash floods have killed over 100 people and displaced over 770,000 in Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia over the past few weeks. Simultaneously, the severe heat wave currently sweeping through Brazil is being attributed to the El Niño weather phenomenon. Eight Brazilian states have received the lowest July to September precipitation levels in 40 years.

This follows predicted and ongoing humanitarian concerns for these and other parts of the world as a result of the El Niño, with the phenomenon continuing into February 2024.
