Hunger crisis in East Africa

Posted on 12 January 2023

At the end of last year, nine of CID’s member aid agencies published a joint press release about the hunger crisis facing East Africa, calling for greater support to the region.

“We are all feeling the pinch of rising food costs, but for families, especially children in countries like Ethiopia, it’s a life-or-death situation. Food price increases can have devastating effects for the world’s most vulnerable” – Tim Manson, Tearfund New Zealand

Tim and Michelle Sharp from UNICEF Aotearoa, spoke to 1News about the crisis:

“We believe in the importance of humanitarian support, but also long term development initiatives that can help people be more resilient.” – Tim Manson Tearfund

“There's no question that it's a matter of life and death. It shouldn’t take tens of thousands of children to die before we sit up and listen.” – Michelle Sharp, Tearfund
