More non-profit NGOs shut down

Nicaragua's parliament has voted in favour of shutting down 50 non-governmental organisations, for ‘failing to comply with regulations’.

Critics say the move is part of a larger crackdown on opponents of the president, which has seen 144 NGOs banned so far this year, from NGOs promoting educational projects, representing dental surgeons, and one promoting the rights of girls. Universities and foundations have also been closed. The United Nations' Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights expressed its concern.
