US seeks to dominate China in the Pacific with proposed budget increase

Posted on 15 March 2023

In President Biden's proposed federal budget released last week, over US 7.1 billion of funding was allocated for the Marshall Islands, Micronesia and Palau. Although the budget has not yet been approved, its success would mean providing much-needed economic assistance to these Pacific nations through payments spread over a period of twenty years.

This action has been described by the White House themselves as a method to “out-compete China” in the region. They have stated that “The People’s Republic of China (PRC) is the United States’ only competitor with both the intent to reshape the international order and increasingly, the economic, diplomatic, military, and technological power to do it.”
