Vanuatu's progress, and challenges, in achieving good governance

Posted on 12 April 2023

A recent Dev Policy Blog article revealed that despite Vanuatu’s successes in recent years tackling corruption, they are still experiencing significant challenges in achieving good governance.

Compared to significant accounts of political corruption 25 years ago, Vanuatu have seen huge improvements, reflected in its Corruption Perception Index and more positive accounts by Vanuatu respondents in the Global Corruption Barometer.

However, there is still notable concern of corruption in the nation, with 73% of respondents in the barometer saying that it is a big problem in government. It is also clear that despite more funding anti-corruption agencies are facing issues in their reach and strategy. The new agency promised in last years budget is also yet to begin its operations.
