CID Photo Competition 2019

The CID Photo Competition 2019 closed on 7 October and the winners were announced at the CID Annual Conference on 21 October 2019.

CID received a total of 57 submissions, across three categories:

  • Development (amateur photographers)
  • Humanitarian Aid | Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) (amateur photographers)
  • Professional photographers | Humanitarian & Development – for photographers based in NZ (non-prize category)

 

The winner of the Development (amateur) category is Chris Hartnett, VSA volunteer in Vanuatu, with the below photo portraying the Provincial Water Supervisor for Malampa Province, Richard Tasi, putting the finishing touches on the floor of a new 22,500 L Ferro Cement Tank for rainwater collection in Hog Harbour. This tank was constructed as part of a training exercise for the Department Of Water Resources staff.

 

 

The winner of the Humanitarian Aid | Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) (amateur) category is Ethan Donnell, UNICEF's Leader of Digital Content, with the below photo portraying Mother Sarifah in Pandere Village, Indonesia, with her son Luthfi (now six months old) who was born in the week after the earthquake. She stopped breastfeeding him at two months after a government distribution of baby formula. However, with the advice of a UNICEF-trained midwife returned to breastfeeding her newborn a month later.

 

The winner of the professional photographers (non-prize) category, is Matthew Wallace with the below photo portraying a CBM community worker assessing an elderly man's vision after he had cataract surgery the day before. The photo was taken for CBM at a CBM ran outreach clinic in the highlands of PNG.
