Accepting refugees, but behind on quotas

Posted on 29 March 2022

New Zealand will now be taking 150 refugees a year for three years from Australian detention centres in the Pacific, after offers reaching back almost ten years. The arrivals will be included as part of New Zealand's existing refugee quota, however, our refugee quota of 1500 a year has not been filled for three years now because of the Covid-19 pandemic.  Of the 463 refugees accepted into New Zealand in 2021, people have arrived from Pakistan (75), Myanmar (73), Afghanistan (71), Colombia (69), Syria (58), Somalia (46), Turkey (20), Burundi (11), Cambodia (6) and other countries (14).
