Alarming prevalence of gender based violence in the Pacific

Posted on 30 November 2023

As the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence begins, it is important to acknowledge the extent of the problem in the Pacific region. The Pacific has one of the highest recorded rates of violence against women and girls globally; with 2 out of 3 women who have been subjected to physical and/or sexual violence in their lifetime.

Pacific Islands Forum Secretary General Henry Puna
acknowledged the issue on International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, saying “we must invest more into doing more.” He suggests that accountability, confidence in the security and law of governments, as well as advocacy and engagement of men, boys and the wider community are all essential components in tackling the issue.
