Bougainville Police Hopeful for Peace Amid Southern Violence

Posted on 09 April 2024

Bougainville’s police chief, Francis Tokura, remains optimistic about quelling violence in the southern region. Late last month, clashes erupted between factions of the Me’ekamui in the autonomous Papua New Guinea territory. The Me’ekamui, an offshoot from the Bougainville Revolutionary Army that fought for the region’s independence in the 1990s, engaged in conflict that resulted in a man’s death. In response, retribution escalated, leading to the destruction of New Dawn FM’s local studios. Tokura and senior government officials have encouraged the warring groups to channel their energy into productive endeavors. Ideas such as community projects and further education for the youth are being explored. However, the recent burning down of New Dawn FM’s Buin transmitter poses communication challenges for the region.

The loss of New Dawn FM’s transmitter in Buin is deeply felt in Bougainville. The radio station had been instrumental in disseminating information from Buka to south Bougainville. Tokura expressed concern about the impact of this loss on communication. While police investigate the reasons behind the radio station’s targeting, efforts continue to engage the youth in meaningful activities as an alternative to violence. The hope is that by focusing on community development and education, the region can move toward lasting peace.
