Displacement in DRC heightened after escalation of violence

Posted on 20 October 2023

UNHCR have announced that 90,000 people in the Eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have been forced to flee their homes since the beginning of this month.

This comes following another escalation in violence between M23 rebel groups and local armed forces in North Kivu province. "The resurgence of violent clashes since October 1 raises concern about a fresh deterioration in the humanitarian situation," said OCHA.

There are already 2.4 million people displaced in the North Kivu Province and those residing the periphery area of the conflict are facing disease outbreak, lack of drinking water, dire living conditions and educational disruption due to the volume of displaced people. The region urgently requires humanitarian assistance, but organisations' ability to respond is restricted by the ongoing violence.
