Migration is influencing Tongan gender norms

Posted on 23 February 2023

A study supported by the Pacific Research program investigates how relocation impacts Tonga's traditional gender norms.

Tonga has deep seated gender norms that reflect inequalities between men and women, but also complexities in the way each group views gender roles.

Through a series of surveys, this report finds that migration seems to change some of these widely held perspectives. The report suggests that moving country does this through introducing Tongan people to different cultural practices and values, and by bringing more women into the workforce.
