Ongoing humanitarian crisis in Yemen after eight years of conflict

Posted on 05 April 2023

On the eight year anniversary of the conflict in Yemen, the nation still faces an ongoing humanitarian crisis with a pressing need for aid. The conflict, which began in 2015 between the Yemini Government and the Houthi rebels, plunged the country into one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.

It is estimated that currently 21 million people require humanitarian assistance in the nationwith 17.3 million facing severe food insecurity. OCHA’s 2022 Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP) only recieved 53% of the humanitarian funding needed, meaning millions of people in the nation will not receive the support they require this year.

Last year's deal putting a lapse in fighting between the two groups expired in October. However, the recent restoration of diplomacy between Iran and Saudi Arabia does give some hope for future stability.
