Plastic waste overwhelms Tonga landfill

Posted on 19 April 2022

The only landfill in Tonga is filling up with plastic waste from relief efforts following the volcano eruption. A reported 86,000 bottles of water arrived in shipping containers of aid supplies. Currently Tonga has no recycling collection, so everything ends up in the landfill which has limited space.

The Waste Authority is planning to roll out a new recycling service when lockdown is lifted, as well as training and support on how to use balers donated by HMAS Canberra.
