US Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff has announced that USAID will be providing $US2.6 million of funding to support Samoa in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR).

Emhoff made the announcement of this grant while visiting Samoa on 23 and 24 July. He also revealed that the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will give further support to the region, with $US117,000 to assist Samoa with their National Tsunami Ready Program.

Ahead of his visit, the White House stated the trip would aim to “highlight (the US) shared work to address the climate crisis, enhance disaster preparedness, promote sustainable and inclusive economic development, and invest in the economic empowerment of women” as well as to “underscore the strong U.S. relationship with Samoa and the commitment of the United States to the Pacific Islands.”
