Vaccine equity in the Pacific

Posted on 12 April 2022

The Australian government last week pledged another AUS$85 million to the COVAX scheme, but experts say it’s still not enough.

However, Professor José Manuel Barroso, the board chair of vaccine sharing alliance Gavi, states this is not enough. “This pandemic is not over: while gaps in coverage remain. Achieving equity is the key to breaking COVID now. We cannot afford to wait and risk the virus undoing all the progress that has been made."

In November last year, the Lowy Institute published a model for forecasting vaccine distribution across the Pacific. Pacific ncountries are still struggling with low COVID-19 rates of vaccination and new waves of infection. Although governments across the region are better armed to improve rates of vaccination. DevPolicyBlog have looked at these issues more broadly.
