Violence flares following PNG elections

Posted on 25 July 2022

Violence has broken out, with supporters of rival election candidates attacking each other outside Papua New Guinea's main sports stadium. A police commander in the capital Port Moresby, Anthony Wagambie, said the violence that broke out near the Sir John Guise Stadium put people's lives in danger.

The UN Country Team in Papua New Guinea has also called for an “immediate cessation” to the election-related violence amidst a deteriorating security situation in the Highlands region, with Government sources confirming “deaths, assaults, rape, and the extensive destruction of property and infrastructure”.
