Fairtrade Australia & New Zealand

The Fairtrade vision is a world in which all small-scale producers farmers and workers can enjoy secure and sustainable livelihoods, fulfil their potential and decide on their future.

Since 2006, Fairtrade Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) has been partnering with both producers and consumers to pursue our joint vision of a world where trade is made fair, producers and their communities are empowered and sustainable development is fostered.

Fairtrade ANZ’s work with farmers in the Pacific is primarily focused on supporting producer organisations to access the Fairtrade markets and develop into strong, sustainable businesses and communities. As of 2018, the Fairtrade Pacific family has grown to incorporate sixteen Fairtrade certified producer organisations, across Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga and Timor-Leste. Through these partnerships, Fairtrade ANZ is enabling commodities such as coffee, cocoa, coconuts, vanilla and sugar, to reach highly competitive international markets and increasing the benefits of Fairtrade for over 24,000 households.

Fairtrade ANZ also has a strong commercial focus and works closely with consumers and businesses across Australia and New Zealand, to promote products sourced from Fairtrade farmers around the world. Thanks to this work the Fairtrade Mark continues to be most the recognised certification label adorning international shelves.

So what makes Fairtrade different?

  • Fairtrade is 50% owned by producers. Fairtrade works with a range of stakeholders but our global system is 50 percent owned by producers representing farmer and worker organisations.
  • The Minimum Price; for most Fairtrade goods there is a Fairtrade Minimum Price which is set to cover the cost of sustainable production for that product in that region.
  • The Fairtrade Premium; Over and above the Fairtrade price, the Fairtrade Premium is an additional sum of money, which goes into a communal fund for workers and farmers to use – as they see fit - to improve their social, economic and environmental conditions.
  • Fairtrade works with a third-party auditor FLOCERT, to ensure that all the links along Fairtrade supply chains are adhering to the Fairtrade Standards.
